about a month ago my brilliant plan to have a garden box in the back yard went under way. as the screws went in, the compost dumped and the plants planted, my dreams of herb heaven and fresh veggies seemed that much closer. as i learned the correct amount of water, that i planted things too close and how to fertilize and keep bugs away, i started to realize what so many people have told me before: gardening teaches you many many many things.
growth is a funny thing. while you’re busy try to grow as much as possible, as fast as you can, you might not actually see the growth as it is. you might feel as if you’ve only budged an inch, or that you havent budged at all, or worse, that you’ve somehow managed to shrink a bit. growth. it’s a tricky thing to judge for yourself.
recently i was checking in on the garden and i saw a tiny little cucumber. i got emensely excited as it’s the first vegetable that’s actually managed to grow so far. oh, those herbs are growing like crazy and i have a mojito date with andrew in the near future to try out some of the freshly grown mint. but, that little itty bitty cucumber was the first in the veggie race. i ran inside to grab my camera and i pushed aside a few leafs excited to document the small amount of success i was having. and after a lizard managed to scare me to death, i saw it. not one itty bitty cucumber but three full grown cucumbers! completely unexpected and entirely satisfying. growth! it might be tricky, but it’s always always always exhilarating when you do see it – in all it’s three cucumber glory!
dwell in possibility…
